Discover the Power of Place-Based Teaching

GLSI believes in the power of educators to bring learning to life and help students discover relevance, purpose, and leadership in their academic achievements. For 20 years, we've been building a community of thousands of educators throughout Michigan and across the Great Lakes region who are prepared, empowered, connected, and supported to take student learning beyond the classroom and into the community.

The fundamental work of GLSI is to train, mentor, and support classroom educators and school/district administrators with the pedagogical understanding, planning and implementation strategies, mentorship and coaching, and student learning resources necessary to teach experientially through the places students are most connected to–their communities.

GLSI utilizes two primary strategies to train and support individual educators, school teams, and district-wide communities with Place-Based Education professional development. GLSI Hubs provide year-round educator professional development, coaching, and project support with a local-regional community of educators. GLSI also provides the same for educators throughout the Great Lakes Basin through virtual professional development institutes, remote coaching and project support, and by connecting a disbursed community of like-minded educators who are striving to teach through place-based approaches.

If you are in select regions of Michigan, you're next step is to connect with your regional GLSI Hub. If you're outside of a GLSI Hub service region, take your first step by joining the next GLSI Place-Based Educator Institute. Have some experience with PBE and looking to deepen your practice or expand your student projects with more in-depth support from GLSI and a team of experienced peer educators? Apply to join the School Year 2026-27 Place-Based Educator Fellowship program.

What GLSI Educators say:

"I have been fortunate enough to have professional development with GLSI for two years now, and have attended two of their National PBE Conferences. The PBE Institute and Fellowship have challenged me to reach new heights in my practice, and I cannot stress enough how much of an impact these two cohorts have made. The resources alone would have been sufficient. The coursework was robust, and could have stood alone. But the mentorship, the camaraderie, and the support have been invaluable. The connections made, both with other practitioners and within my own work, are priceless. I hope that this program continues to grow and offer more and more opportunities."
