The Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative launched in 2007 with a vision to invest in the long-term health of the Great Lakes ecoystems and communities by helping young people throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes Basin learn through their local environment and lead stewardship action projects to increase the health of their community and the Great Lakes watershed. Now supporting hundreds of schools and communities across the region each year, GLSI has grown into a national leader for place-based education and youth-led stewardship of the Great Lakes Basin.

I have been fortunate enough to have professional development with GLSI for two years now, and have attended two of their National PBE Conferences. The PBE Institute and Fellowship have challenged me to reach new heights in my practice, and I cannot stress enough how much of an impact these two cohorts have made. The resources alone would have been sufficient. The coursework was robust, and could have stood alone. But the mentorship, the camaraderie, and the support have been invaluable. The connections made, both with other practitioners and within my own work, are priceless. I hope that this program continues to grow and offer more and more opportunities.

The GLSI Network

As an organization, GLSI has grown to serve communities and K-12 schools with our model of place-based stewardship education in all eight states across the Great Lakes Basin. Our roots, and the heart of our network, remain in Michigan. GLSI is both an organization and a network of community-hostedGSLI Hubs. GLSI Hubs operate as unique, community-embedded programs of GLSI and work as a collective to share resources, collaborate on statewide projects, and guide the future of GLSI.  Through our programs across the Great Lakes Basin and each Hub's individual network, GLSI provides programs and ongoing support each year to an expansive network of 500+ PK-12 teachers, 12,500+ PK-12 youth, and hundreds of community partner organizations.
